Rule out 除外しまーす

英単語の『rule』 は他動詞の場合、「統治する、支配する」ですが、「判決する」という意味もあります。 『rule out』 で、何かの選択肢や可能性などから物事を除外し、考慮に入れないと言う意味で使われます。同じような意味の単語で exclude, preclude, remove などがあります。人だけでなく物事を主語にして使うこともできます。それでは会話例でみていきましょう。
A: It’s a beautiful day today! Why don’t we go on a hike to the mountain?
天気最高だね!山にハイキングに行かない?
B: Sure. I think it will be a nice day for a hike. we shouldn’t rule out the possibility of rain though. Let’s pack rain jackets just in case.
いいねー。行こう。雨が降る可能性は無視できないから念のため雨具も持っていこう。
